orange skies illuminate the crows

Oh it’s a cold time in Vancouver! I am sitting here in my studio, glancing out the big window facing the westerly setting sun, marveling at the hundreds of crows that fly by in their evening migration to Burnaby, and trying not to think about the imminent 25min bike trip in zero degree weather. “At least it’s not raining” is all I can muster for self-support. This season of winter is upon us in Vancouver- it came fast and gorgeous with the last few days generously sunny with VERY clear skies and VERY cold temps. The man on the radio is promising a big snowstorm this weekend, and I am looking forward to it- we actually have nothing planned this weekend! All I have to look forward to is some serious cuddling, smooching, watching movies, maybe some baking… just some seriously dreamy uninterrupted Dustin time.

Don’t you just love winter? I mean LOVE IT?! Dustin always said about me I’m a cold weather gal. And I know that it’s so true- I mean, any excuse to bunk down to play board games, make the house smell like cinnamon and apples, hot baths, big woolly sweaters and socks…

If only the winters in Vancouver were less rain and more… Oh whatever. It’s fine. It’s the end of November and I’m biking. What a dream.
Ciao.

China ate my husband

WHOA!! It’s been a week and a half since the Culture Crawl and time has been FLYING along around here, all the work leading up to the big event, now that’s over, and I can’t beleive it’s the end of November so soon… Well a BIG thank you to so many who came out this year and supported this great artist run event. I heard from so many that it was the best year ever, and numbers were definitely at an all time record. And for me? It was great- Lots of positive feedback on my new direction, people saying how it’s nice to see where my work is developing and that the work seems like it’s coming from somewhere very honest and genuine. I think this is good! So THANK YOU! I’m still working on getting the TV show clip that a friend recorded (on VHS!?) converted so I can post it on YouTube. Oh- for those who didn’t hear, my sculpture was one of about 10 pieces featured on a Vancouver talk show, Urban Rush, as a publicity preview before the Culture Crawl. (I was SUCH the proud mother waiting backstage, giggling with excitement.)

So I’m fully recovered from the event, helped along by a great 4-day rest down in Anacortes celebrating US Thanksgiving with Dustin’s family. Yeah, the parents cooked up an 18lb turkey that made my eyes cross when it was pulled out of the oven. And of course lots of college football to entertain us all- but why does Dori always seem to cheer for the “wrong” team?! (Sweet game Arkansas! McFadden’s got Heisman written all over him.)

My exciting (sic) news is that I get Dustin at home for a few weeks before he has to go back to China. He’s been over to Asia 5 times this year so far, and hopefully NO MORE before Christmas. It’s been pretty hard on us, although I totally encourage the experience and all that comes with it, it really sucks to have him away for so much. I didn’t realize how much I would miss him! And really, it’s the little day to day stuff not having him around for that matters so much- isn’t it always? So he’s become quite the traveler, although he has said the last couple times that it’s getting old, cause he’s not exactly “traveling”. He’s in a hotel for 2-3 weeks going to work everyday, it just happens to be in China… in an industrial park the size of Denver. Well, I told him he better save up those air-miles for me, cause I plan on joining him one of these trips- oh yeah, I’d just kick back for a couple weeks in the hotel, get massages, catch up on my reading, take little day trips around to find some pottery (there must be some pottery!).

Anyway, I’ve got another class tonight here in my studio- I’ve been having weekly classes in my studio since September, and they are going so well! I forgot how much I enjoy teaching, (a natural skill apparently!) and it’s been nice to have some income flowing from something other than my artwork… Teaching the classes helps make up for what I’m doing in the rest of the studio, as far as art making goes- I can stop complaining about not making any money, and feel like I can give myself a bit more permission to just keep going, cause I’m managing to pay for it all right now, with some extra. (Thank you jebus.)

Well, time to get cleaned up in here and make room for students!

Ciao.

This coming weekend is the Eastside Culture Crawl! I am excited to be a participating artist, and will be showing my art in my studio in the Mergatroid Building.

Come by and see what’s new this year. Hope to see you there!

Happy happy happy

I just spent the past 10 days in Eastern South Dakota, making my rounds with old friends and family. Eastern South Dakota is where I grew up- I lived there until I was 16 when I moved to England with my other set of parents. Well, I haven’t been back to Sioux Falls in a year and half, and there was much catching up to be done. The biggest reason for my going home was to celebrate my Jack-dad’s retiring from the military after 41 years of service. It was also his 60th birthday, his and Dianne’s anniversary, and my nephew Mason’s 2nd birthday, and all of this happened on the same day, so needless to say there was much partying and congratulating to be done. Actually, the cake wasn’t big enough to list all the things going on that day, so the cake maker summarized it eloquently: “happy happy happy”. In deed.

Here’s the cake:

10 days goes so fast, I always wish there was more time…
