In the ‘hood
I know it’s been almost a month, and here i am, sitting outside in my lovely little backyard, birdbath in place, tomatoes and hot peppers growing wildly, typing away on our new(ish) laptop with one ear listening attentively to the conversation being had between (get this) the 6 year old girl leaning out of her second story window and the 9 year old boy standing in the yard on the other side of the fence.
Mia: So how was your day today?
Duane: what?
Mia: I said how was your day today?
Duane: fine. (sound of pop can being opened)
Mia: i can open a pop can by myself
Duane: glurg glurg BELCH
Mia: YOU’RE SO FUNNY!
Duane: whatever.
Mia: my mom said my baby sitter is going to be here in 4 minutes, and i can come out and play then.
Duane: okay, whatever. I might still be here.
Mia: can you save some pop for me?
Duane: ah, no.
Duane then turns to talk to his mom through the window of their apartment…
Mia (waving emphatically from window) HELLO DUANE HELLO HELLO!
Mia is then bored and starts yelling to me and Pink “PINK! PINK! HOW ARE YOU!!?”
Pink is scared and runs away.
Whatelse i hear: the neighbors in the next building over are having a world cup party and i can hear word for word the commentary coming from the TV and the fans in the living room.
The Neil Young guy is back. He’s at the top floor in the building next door, like everyday, blasting his favorite music with open windows. I wonder if he dances around his apartment naked sipping gin and tonics… Ocassionally Mia yells “Shut up that music!”. This seems to have no effect on the volume, but i’m glad about it. I love the obsession, the routine, and i love Neil, too.
“do you have a boyfriend?” Mia yells at me. A husband. Mia looks confused. “Where is he?” At work. “oh. ”
“Do you want to see my guinea pig?” Before I have a chance to answer, she is gone and back, dangling a small black rodent out the window yelling at me “SEEEE! He doesn’t have a name yet!!”. I encourage her to return the nameless creature back to a safe spot.

I love living in this city. I love feeling like i’m just one more interesting person in this interesting place. I can’t imagine leaving after almost 4 years here. I feel like i’m just getting settled in to this bizzare place- oh the CITY!
